GREECE

The school is located approximately 5km away from the center of Athens, at the suburb called Agios Dimitrios that has a population of about 85.000 people. The word "Round" is what the residents of the town mainly use to refer to the building that houses the 1ο GEL, the 1o Gymnasium  of Agios Dimitrios and a Vocational school. It is indeed a completely round building with a very interesting design philosophy and it is the only round school in Greece. The building includes 36 classrooms, teachers' rooms,  computer classrooms, chemistry labs, meeting rooms, theater, other spaces and two gyms that are located separately. Throughout the day it is used by approximatelly 1.200 students and  80 teachers. The area of the building is 50.000 m2 and the gyms 1.140 m2. It is considered as a valuable architectural and cultural element of the town. The 1o GEL of Agios Dimitrios is a secondary school that provides general education and prepares students for their admittance to universities if they want to. Our school has a lot of honorary distinctions in National competitions at Philosophy and Physics and is participating in Erasmus programs.

Although most school buildings in the 1960s were designed by the technical department of the School Buildings Organization, in 1967 until 1969 well-known architects were commissioned to design some school buildings. Among them was Takis Zenetos who in 1969 made  the design of the school. The design was supposed to keep the typical linear layout of the halls in accordance with the curriculum, philosophy and educational policy of the School Building Organization, which had not changed since the 19th century.  But Zenetos decided not to  follow this previous philosophy and proposed a circular arrangement of classrooms in which an inner circular courtyard forms a public space for the school community. For this reason, he was forced to have long discussions with people that were in charge so that they finally  accept this circular arrangement. The link of the school site:

PORTUGAL

Brief Historical Note

By Decree of January 3, 1884, an Industrial School was created in Covilhã, with the aim of “providing education appropriate to the predominant industries in that locality, and this education must have an eminently practical form”. Two days later, on January 5th, in an extraordinary session, the Chamber of Covilhã, “congratulating itself on having met one of the most pressing needs of this municipality, namely education”, decided to make a building available for this purpose. end. Later that year, it received the designation of Campos Melo Industrial School. While the Chamber carries out the adaptation works, José Maria da Silva Campos Melo, patron of the institution, provides a house, on Rua dos Tanoeiros, for its temporary installation. Classes began on December 16, 1884, and in 1885 the School was transferred to the building provided by the municipality, having been installed in the current space in 1912. Progressively, courses and disciplines linked to the textile industry were created – areas of Design, Chemistry, Spinning, Weaving, Dyeing, Debuxo,… - and alongside those, others appear as complementary – Electricity, Mechanics, Accounting,… In 1948, it became known as Escola Industrial e Comercial Campos Melo, and in the years 1950, the oldest building underwent expansion work, and a new body was also built, called the Office Block, opened in October 1955, where several Laboratories and Workshops are installed. In 1970, the School changed its name to Escola Técnica Campos Melo, as it integrated Quinta da Lageosa as its agricultural section. In 1975, with the unification of education, it was named Escola Secundária Campos Melo, a name that, with slight variations, it maintains to this day. The remodeling of the Library (2001), the construction of the Sports Pavilion (2003), the creation of the Educational Museum (2004) and the Future Room (2017) as well as the remodeling of some spaces (Auditorium, Student Room, Arts Workshop , Photography Laboratory) brought important improvements to the teaching/learning conditions offered. Always attentive to the challenges facing the education of young and adult audiences and the context in which it operates, ESCM has sought to diversify its educational offer, increasingly asserting itself in the scientific-humanistic, technological and artistic aspects. Since 2003, it has been an Associated School of the Covilhã Prison Establishment, where it teaches basic and secondary level courses and of the Association for Technological and Professional Training of Beira Interior (2008) for teaching Technological Specialization Courses, particularly in the areas of Management, Multimedia, Environmental Management and Industrial Maintenance. In 2006, it became the Center for Recognition, Validation and Certification of Skills, the following year, Centro Novas Oportunidades, then Center for Qualification and Professional Education, currently Centro Qualifica, bringing together the majority of schools in the municipality of Covilhã and Belmonte and expanding its action in partnerships with Parish Councils, companies and other entities. Having adopted, as the motto of its Educational Project, “A School that is proud of the past, that reflects on the present, that builds the future…”, ESCM intends to assert itself as an institution that promotes the “training of entrepreneurial citizens, creative, ethically responsible, capable of lifelong learning and self-fulfillment through culture, science, technology and aesthetics” (Educational Project 2014-2018). On the occasion of his 100th birthday (1985), the Presidency of the Republic awarded him the degree of Honorary Member of the Order of Public Instruction and, in 2004, when he celebrated 120 years of existence, the Covilhã City Council awarded him the Gold Medal of Municipal Merit, as “recognition for his activity in the area of Education, thus contributing to the prestige of the municipality of Covilhã”. In 2014, it received the Voluntary School Seal, an area that it has been delving into to reinforce citizenship skills.
In the last decade, it has progressively opened up to internationalization, having created diverse opportunities for its students and teachers to learn, teach and work in the European context.

The IPSCEOA  "GALLO "situated in Agrigento(a city in the south of Sicily famous for its Greek temples) is a professional Hotel Institute which provides three courses: reception and Tourism, service in room and bar, catering and enogastronomie. A technical branch is attached to the Institute: it is the Nautical Institute which is located in Porto Empedocle, a maritime place. The students are over 600 (5 years of study), the professors a hundred of whom a good percentage is titular and in the administration there are about 36 people. The school is equipped with several computer rooms and a large auditorium, a building that hosts many events and is open to the territory and other schools that wish to enjoy it. Our school collects many applications for registration because the diploma allows to find work almost immediately in the surroundings: hotels, restaurants, pizzerias. However, we feel the need to cultivate languages even more so that students can choose their job opportunities abroad. The establishment had already participated in an  Erasmusplus project  thanks to a motivated team that believes in the value of twinnings and cooperation between schools. The school is engaged in regional projects on inclusion and immigration(F.A.M.I.) and the Training Offer Plan provides innovative strategies for living together and collaborating. The families of students with disabilities prefer this professional institute that promotes practice in laboratories. The school population consists of pupils from very different socio-economic and cultural realities.  They  will be inserted into the project either for mobility or for work during the days dedicated to the Erasmusplus.  Learning Place, the school is an aggregation centre that offers a variety of training opportunities. Through the strengthening of educational proposals, the school organizes activities aimed at improving the quality of projects by giving students the opportunity to express their potential in the best possible way. It is responsible for compensating for cultural gaps by creating a motivating, attractive, encouraging and formative context, offering all students adequate support for the development of an open and conscious identity. The key people responsible for implementing the project are part of a team, they can be replaced by others who will take over if necessary.
